You can check the accuracy with RMS AC as you said, or DC. It does not matter. The meter movement is always DC from the thermocouple effect. Since many of us have variable 12 volt supplies, it would be relatively easy to use one of these, and a load like a automobile headlamp. Just put it in series with the ammeter, and crank up the voltage.
