The ARRL Technician and General study guides are good as are the Radio
School books. Contacting the VEC is also a good idea.
I use the ARRL books here with students.
Healthfully yours,

Subject: [AMRadio] ham ticket

A local elderly gentleman wants to get his ticket. What instructional
materials would you suggest?

A guess I should contact a local VEC.

Thank you
