Yeah that stuff is Glyptol (sp?) a WW II version of Locktite. You may be able to flood the shaft / knob bushing with something like Flux Remover from a spray can or MEK. I don't think Lacquer Thinner will do any good, just be careful not to get any solvent on the plastic knob.....

Inductance Tuning control  'M'?  The mechanism on mine was working just fine until last night and now is just about impossible to turn.  Removed the center screw on the control, but the knob will not come off the shaft, looks like it was affixed with an adhesive along with a screw..  It does not appear that the inductor itself is causing all the friction, just the geared control, and no, the dial lock is not on, unless it is stuck inside even with the locking screw loose.
