ditto, vinegar works very well and it doesn't seem to matter if it is clear
vinegar or not.

Put the end of the old wire in some vinegar and leave for a while.  The
vinegar will remove the oxidation and leave the wire shiny which will take
solder.  It does take a while on stranded wire to get in and around the
individual wires in the bundle.
