On steamers /tenders I use gelled hand cleaner - the kind that is used by garages mechanics etc. . Use only a small amount on a soft toothbrush. Apply a small amount on the surface of the toothbrush, scrub the surface lightly, then wipe off the sludge. (Do this as many times as you feel you need to in order to get it clean - usually once or twice is enough) Then wipe and shine with a dry soft cloth. It will leave a soft lustre behind that makes a steamer (or tender) look new. The product I use is made for Canadian Tire stores in Canada and contains aloe and lanolin (a natural oil). It turns liquid when applied and scrubbed with the toothbrush. It works well on wrinkled surfaces. I use it for cleaning telegraph equipment as well. A small jar will last a long time.
