It's faint, but loud enough to be annoying. I see that there was a service bulletin (1964-4) that addresses a condition in transceive with the HT-44 (mine is stand alone with a CE 100V), that provided for "further isolation." In looking at the schematic, it would seem that the modification would increase the muting, but I just wanted to make sure before I started hacking around with the soldering iron. Anybody have any opinion? My 117's serial number starts with 117002... And hoping to find an INTACT HT-44 to marry it up with. The auction site has some interesting specimens at the time of this writing which confirm PT Barnum's assertions. Why someone would have ripped out the phasing transformers to put it on CB... Message-ID: Hello All, Mike Bittner W6MAB has very kindly sent me the schematic for the Hallicrafters CB-5, a Citizens Band 6 channel AM transceiver that puts out 5 watts. I don't own one. My interest in it is as a battery powered homebrew QRP transmitter circuit for CW and AM phone. Of course it uses tubes for the transmitter section, but they are the miniature battery tubes 3A4 oscillator, and a pair of 3B4's in parallel in the final, for a full QRP "gallon" of 5 watts. Being a confirmed "glowbugger" from "back in the day" it looks nifty. My question: Does anyone have any experience with this particular rig on AM, or a similar one that only puts out 5 watts? I tend to think of 20 watts as the appropriate QRP output for AM, and 5 watts seems awfully small, especially for use on the lower bands. 73, Brian Burns Ex: W5BRO, K6UCD See my website: www.lessonsinlutherie.com --- This email has been checked for viruses by Avast antivirus software. https://www.avast.com/antivirus From hallicrafters at mailman.qth.net Wed Jun 17 14:08:51 2015 From: hallicrafters at mailman.qth.net (Brian Harris via Hallicrafters) Date: Wed, 17 Jun 2015 13:08:51 -0500 Subject: [Hallicrafters] HX-500 serial numbers Message-ID: I have an HX-500 with no obvious serial number however it does have an X13 stamped in the rear apron. So somewhere on the chassis they must have tagged, stenciled, rubber stamped, etc. the serial number. But after 50 years, tags fall off, ink gets wiped away, etc. It's also worthy to note, that besides this 12 page service bulletin, there was also Instructions, K52778-1, for a "improved power transformer replacement" and replacing the 12AX4GTB's to a 5R4GYB and the use of solid-state devices in the bias rectifier circuit. The modified power supply circuit is included with this information. So there are probably HX-500's out there that have been modified to use this new transformer and a single 5R4 instead of a pair of 12AX4's. As far as I can tell, the HX-500 schematic (the one that came with the manual) was never updated to include any of the changes that were designated in Service Bulletin, 5001-1, nor was it updated with the change from 12AX4's to a single 5R4 and the changes to the bias rectifier circuit.
